Dr. Thanomporn Laohajaratsang is an Associate Professor in Learning Technology, Department of Technology, Science and Mathematics Education, Chiang Mai University (CMU). She works as an assistant to the Chiang Mai University President in digital and communication technology affairs, as well as being a consultant to the Information Technology Service Center, CMU. Her major areas of work involve designing and developing strategic plans for the implementation of new technology for university administration and communication.
Regarding her academic background, Thanomporn studied in the United States, receiving her Master’s degree and Ph.D. in Computer Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), in 1995. Moreover, in 1999, she was a research scholar at the National Institute of Multimedia Education, in Japan. More recently, in 2010, she was a visiting scholar at the College of Education, Indiana University. In 2017, she was invited by the School of Engineering and Technology, IUPUI, to join their Cyberlab research team, and collaborate on their research work.
Her research topics include the design of future learning environments and innovative learning approaches. Her most recent research focuses on the design of effective pedagogical approaches using a cutting edge next-generation Learning Management System for students in higher education. At present, she is also a board committee member and reviewer of several national and international journals in the educational technology field, such as the Journal of Internet and Higher Education, Journal for Educational Media and Technology etc.In her extensive career, Thanomporn has designed several online learning programs, MMORPGs, and computer-based programs that enhance teacher effectiveness and enrich the learning experience for students. Her CMU MOOC program, launched in 2016 is recognized as the first MOOC course in Thailand.
In addition to her other technological and academic accomplishments, Thanomporn has written several books published in Thai, chapter books, and research articles published in multiple languages. Her books, such as Designing Computer-Assisted Instruction, e-Learning Design, and Innovation in Learning Technology for the Education 4.0 era are considered one-of-a kind.
Some of her career highlights include her positions as the Director of the Information Technology Service Center, CMU; Deputy Director of the Graduate College at CMU; member of the board of directors for Educational Technology Association in Thailand; consultant for CPF training Thailand (2012-2018); consulting expert for UNESCO’s Next-Generation of Teachers project; guest instructor for Exploring Information Superhighway Course at UIUC, USA. Some of the most successful projects at CMU, that she is proud of and which have become prototypes for several universities in Thailand, include a) the Digital University project, and b) an innovative professional development program for CMU instructors that actively involved them in designing innovative learning approaches for the 21st century.
